Homemade Scent Shields or Odor Eliminators for Hunting

Deer have an uncanny ability to distinguish between different scents. A whitetail deer's nose is nearly 4,000 times more effective at differentiating different smells compared to a human, thus emphasizing how crucial it is to reduce your own scent before heading out for your hunting trip.
Unfortunately, you are unable to eliminate human odor completely, but you can reduce its strength. This requires you to know a little bit about odor and where it originates. A majority of the odors from our human body stems from anaerobic bacteria (essentially when your body does not have enough oxygen). By eliminating the bacteria, you are able to "hide" your scent. Using some common products readily available at stores such as Walmart, you can create your own scent shield with relative ease without putting a dent into your wallet for brand name products.
You will need three products to create this home made scent shield: 3% hydrogen peroxide (to kill the bacteria and is odorless), distilled water, and a spray bottle. You have the option of using baking soda as well, but if not mixed properly the baking soda could leave white residue on your clothes and gear.
To create the homemade scent shield, mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 quart of distilled water. If you would like to use baking soda, adding half a cup of baking soda will do. Continue to stir until the baking soda has dissolved. When creating this mixture, be sure to wear a mask and gloves as the process will release some gases that you want to avoid inhaling too much of.
When you have spent enough time mixing to the point where you have a consolidated liquid, you can transfer the liquid to a spray bottle. If you have created more than the spray bottle can handle, don't worry, you can store the extra into any container (preferably one that you do not want). The final step to completing the scent shield is to leave the mixture in a dark place for three days.
Once three days are up, you can use your scent shield as a hair and body wash. You'll eliminate a majority of the odor creating bacteria and be virtually odorless. Keep in mind that you must cover your entire body to prevent detection; otherwise any area missed may still be detectable. It's also a good idea to spray your hunting clothes, boots, and any other gear that you may have. Post hunt; don't forget to remove your scent blocker by taking a shower using your usual soap or body wash. The same process applies when cleaning your clothes and gear.
Creating a scent shield is an extremely easy and inexpensive process and is highly recommended to increase the enjoyment and efficiency of your bow hunting excursions.
