5% off means 5% of the cost is taken off. to find the amount taken off, we have to multiply the percentage (converted into a decimal) by the original price. then we subtract that from the original price to get the sale price
ex: 5% off an $80 item
price off = (0.05)(80) = $4
sale price = 80-4 = $76
