Why has our dog suddenly started emptying his anal glands?

We have a 16 month old english springer spaniel. In the past few weeks when we he has been sat on one of our knees having a cuddle (soft I know!) secretions from his anal glads have litterally dripped on to us, the sofa and the carpet. I'd guess there's really just a few drops but it is enough to stink the place to high heaven. At the time he has been anything but afraid. It is very clear fluid so not infected I think. He has the occasional "scoot" along the floor but very rarely. His stools are pretty hard and regular. Although he has had the snip some 9 months ago he has been quite obsessed with various soft objects (such as duvets) in the past few days. Is this just a normal tenage hormonal thing? Is there something we should do? My first thought was maybe his glands need emptying but on reflection they seem to be emptying quite well all by themselves!

this is normal its more of a problem when they block, but don't they stink ???? best thing to do is add more fibre to his diet which will firm up his poos and empty the glands more fully when he poops. it could also be that he needs to have them manually emptied at the vets, as they have filled too much thus the constant dripping and pong. start by adding more fibre in the way of biscuits to his meal, and give it 48hrs...if its still a problem book him in, the vet will empty them by hand,m and treat him with a mild antibacterial cleansing solution. good luck
