Representation of homosexuality in Jean Paul Gualtier's perfume image reveals much about this culture. This paper would explicitly identify the language, signs and image characteristics of 2009 summer fragrance in bringing sense of homosexuality as a culture which exist and its related characteristics. First bottle assumes a man's upper body and thighs without arms. On it is the writing "Le Male" suggesting that this product belongs to men and only they normally use it from the thigh region to the chest.
On the package, writings related to "Tonight" can faintly be noticed. This, to some extent, depicts that the product is mostly used during night hours by homosexuals. The package can be seen as round with only one opening at the bottom of the container. This round shape of the package signifies the shape of a man's sexual organ while round opening signifies a female's organ. It therefore represents homosexuals as having both organ structures thus it is useful in boosting a man arousal for sex. With this, we can say that homosexuals play sex.
The perfume assumes a feminine shape around the waist line with blocky shoulders. This simply signifies that homosexuals assume both feminine and masculine shapes. The absence of arms in his bottle creates a very cool picture of how ladies behave. It therefore represent homosexuals as those behaving as ladies through cool postures. Its pink nuance color is very seductive. This color represents homosexuals as being greatly attracted and seduced to feminine colors exhibited by their fellows. So it further represents homosexual culture being fuelled by seductive attire colors. The decorations on the bottle of the perfume assume a female's attires. This represents homosexuals as those who like dressing like females so as to boost the sexual urge in another partner. It therefore follows that the perfume is developed for those men who assume and dress up in a more feminine manner.
From the front view, it can be seen that there is a protrusion with a small lateral depression at the middle. When keenly analyzed; an image of a male and a female sexual organ can faintly be noticed. In addition its positioning signifies that whichever picture it creates is strongly related to sex organ and activity. Therefore, from organ point of view, the designer portrays that some homosexuals have both male and female sexual organs. Thus these people can act as a male or a female during their sexual activity. This would further make homosexuals easily identify their perfume in the market.
On the perfume's bottle, there is an image of one bird. Critically, this bird is single and looks very lonely and desperate. Therefore the perfume designer represents these homosexuals as those who are always desperate of their nature and lonely most of the time. So this perfume is meant for such people. Finally looking the bottle from the neck to top, it assumes feminine structure, with a masculine chest region. This contributes to representing homosexuals as female looking men from their faces.
Semiotic Analysis of Christian Cross
In this analysis, symbols and signs are going to be used to bring out their actual meanings and the significance of their application in the design in the context of Christian beliefs. First, the shape of the cross takes a "+" shape. This means that it is used to crucify a human being with vertical part making contact with legs to head and horizontal part making contact with hands for effective crucifixion. It therefore means that Jesus was crucified straight with his arms widely open. This shape depicts humility found in Jesus even before one is told.
The color of the cross is yellow-brownish. This means that the Cross is made of wood. On the other hand, this color means a somber mood. It means that Christians should feel solemn with Jesus cross. In this picture, we can see three background colors: white, blue and traces of black. The white color is right behind the cross and the cross seems to be in it. It therefore follows that the cross and light are one thing; light is in cross and cross in light. Light has been used to mean hope and purity. It symbolizes the hope and purity Christians develop when they see, touch, approach or bow to the Cross. It further means that this hope and purity are brought by Jesus acceptance to be crucified on the cross. Traces of black colors, in the far background, which have been used here symbolizes the sinful side of life man was considered to live before crucifixion of Jesus. It means that sin was there before the cross issue which is in the foreground. Man was considered unclean and unfit for heavenly consideration before Jesus' crucifixion.
The positioning of the white light also conveys some strong spiritual message to Christians. It symbolizes spiritual transition from evil to purity. In this context, it therefore means that hope and salvation that the Cross brings emerged or came when every man was considered sinful and fit to perish forever. Its conspicuousness means that the power of this hope is far greater than the sins of this world. The blue color forming part of the picture symbolizes the sky. This symbol has been used to mean that Jesus came from heaven and finally ascended back to heaven. Similarly, some of its traces which border the light (hope and purity) means that the hope and purity Christians claim from the cross came from above (heaven).
In the image are also two hands. The presence of hands alone means that it is human beings who are associated with the Cross. They are two to mean that a Christian approaches salvation hope, found in the cross, wholesomely with total submission. Finally the orientation of the hands means that salvation at the cross needs much petition and humility just the way Jesus displayed it during his crucifixion on the Cross. In summary, the cross is considered as the most spiritual symbols which restore hope and salvation in Christians' total life.
