Cuba Entertainment Guide – A Night at the Tropicana
Cabaret Tropicana was born in 1939 in the farm Villa Mina of the Havana neighborhood Marianao. This was not its original name, and started as a ballroom for parties and gaming which little by little included musicals. It was actually the artistic director who suggested in 1940 that the name change to Tropicana, due to the sonority and the Caribbean concept that the melody of the flutist Alfredo Brito entailed while the group of dancers were rehearsing for a new choreography.
Nowadays, the luxurious cabaret is the symbol of the Havana nights and few foreign tourists do not take a night from their time to go to the Tropicana. In 1992 the American Academy of the Restaurant Industry gave the cabaret the Best of the Five Stars Diamond Award as the best cabaret in the Americas, and it was selected among another 20 places for broadcasting live to the world the farewell bidding of the 20th century by the American television consortiums ABC and CNN.
The ballet dancer icon that identifies the cabaret welcomes the visitor, a sculpture made by the Cuban artist Rita Longa in 1950. Then, one enters to the Room under the Stars, which has a mobile stage that each night is filled with beautiful voices and dancers that have been acclaimed by millions, and there, surprise and enjoyment become a total experience. This room has a capacity for one thousand people, distributed around the stage, which is surrounded by palm trees and launch pads used by the artists during their performances. Its shows usually have around 300 artists: dancers, acrobats, singers, and musicians.
Tropicana delights its audience with rhythmic songs of mambo, rumba, cha cha, son and danzon; with such a repertoire, classic musicians like Benny Moré, Lecuona or Grenet cannot be missed. Great artists such as Josephine Baker, Tongolele, Xavier Cugat, Los Chavales de España, Carmen Miranda, Liberace, Pedro Vargas, Rita Montaner, Rosita Fornés and Nat King Cole, among others have performed on its stages. In 1954, the French designer Pierre Balmain presented his summer collection having as models the corps de ballet of the cabaret. More recently, Norma Duval, Alejandra Guzmán, Cheo Feliciano and the Japanese fashion designer Junko Koshino have been in Tropicana, an emblematic space that has surpassed the Cuban borders and the borders of international music.
The Tropicana also has branches in Santiago de Cuba and Varadero and its shows have toured around the globe. Needless to say, it is a Paradise under the Stars that is well worth seeing.

My pregnant (recently rescued) cat escaped on her way into the vet on the 9 October and has been missing since. On the 11 october she gave birth in a backyard in balmain, the family were not at all co-operative, hang up on me when I call etc and I don't know if she's still there or not. One of her friends even threatened to kill my cats if I kept looking for my cat. I really need help...please let me know if you can help. I am so upset that I can't just go get her & bring her home. I have actually followed your story about Taryn since you posted. My suggestion is that you seek help from the authorities like the RSPCA or the cops. Tell them the story. If you have documentation rpoving that the cat in the backyard of those ungracious, heartless people is yours, so much the better. Maybe even get a note from the vet from which the cat escaped from. If yoy have papers (vet's bills, record of shots, etc) these will prove that Taryn is your property and you ahve the RIGHT to retrieve it.
