Midnight in Paris (2011) Review
Woody Allen's latest movie begins with the picture perfect Paris, straight out of the tourist's dreams of the city. Here is yet another in a string of cities that Allen disproportionately worships.
Midnight in Paris opened the Cannes Festival and set a rather aloof, flippant, and entertaining atmosphere. The movie is a romantic adventure that dips into fantasy.
The film harkens back to Allen's earlier works, such as The Kugelmass Episode (1977) and The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985). One of the notables about the movie is the brief appearance of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the French President's wife. They say you look heavier under the weight of the camera, but from watching her model figure, you wouldn't know it. She plays a serious and patient guide in a museum.
Allen's Midnight in Paris is like many of his others, in that the main character is really a youthful version of Woody, exploring and critiquing life and culture, along with the institutions and experts that make both unrealistic and difficult to live with.
He has transformed the experience of another tourist spot into a luxurious golden memory glowing. His target is phallic nostalgia, but he is especially speaking to those who would say he hasn't got any more good stories left in him.
Gil is played by Owen Wilson. He is a bottom feeding writer of Hollywood scripts, but he feels a deep pull to produce something of substance, a novel that will stand the test of time. He wants to write a great piece of literature.
While in Paris his fiancée and her parents drive him to reconsider his hollow career. He goes for some fresh air, disgusted by pop culture - a disgust particularly heightened by its contrast with his imagination of the long-gone bohemian culture of what once was Paris.
Party animals in a classic car pick him up traveling back in time. He meets classic greats like Buñuel, Picasso, TS Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald (played by Tom Hiddleston), and even Dali. Gil goes through the entire time without ever meeting anyone mundane.
Wilson delivers his typical girlish, astonishment-struck, wimpy role, which Allen would have likely hammed up a bit and had us chuckling over. However, Gil snags Picasso's mistress (Marion Cotillard) with his boyish enthusiasm. They fall all over each other, but in the mix Gil discovers that she feels the same over her time period as he does about his.
Allen is exposing our penchant for historical tourism while he pulls an Einsteinian Relativity trick on us about romanticizing one culture or a time period over another.
Woody Allen has no illusions about our feelings for history and culture. He knows the power they have over imagination and how that works out in our relationships in reality. That is the brilliance of this film and why it moves from point A to point B and back again. It is a critique on legitimate impulses and on the way we use and abuse them.
