Can Bath and Body Products Make Us Happy and Healthy?
Bath and body products should make you happier and healthier. Body lotions were not created to make us smell good, but to protect our skin from the harsh world. Soap was not originally created because it smelled good, it was created because it washed off dirt and bacteria. While our bath and body products were originally made to make us healthy, do they make us happy?
In the case of bath and body works, the company has focused itself entirely around their fragrances, and they have been monumentally successful. Nearly every woman in the US has at least 3 bottles of Bath and Body Works Products. Chances are, even if you've never set foot inside of one of their stores, you still have a bottle that was given to you as a gift. We all like to give gifts and pleasing fragrances make us happy, putting the two together makes their products very popular even though their products don't necessarily make us healthy.
Unlike Bath and Body Works, the mainstream bath and body industry focuses in their marketing on how their product is so much better than another brand at improving your skin. The focus is always on the latest and greatest solution to aging, dry skin, etc. The consumer buys these products because they want to have good skin, and by keeping up with the latest and greatest we feel happy that we are doing all we can for our skin. Ironically, mainstream products that focus on health fail to deliver on their marketing. Instead, what they do deliver on is a constantly changing consumer focus. You will find that the bottle changes every couple of months, and sometime even faster. This is because they know that it is not having good skin that makes us want to buy, it is wanting good skin and only feeling good about ourselves if we are doing all we can for our skin. That means the always seeking out the latest technology, trying the lotion "specially formulated" for dry skin, trying the intensive healing, etc. Every month we say the same thing. Maybe that is what I need to have perfect skin?
To answer the original question, the bath and body industry as we know it tries to make us happy, but does not try to make us healthy. They understand that it is not being healthy that makes us happy, it is trying to be healthy that makes us happy and when we smell good, we feel good, and if we feel good we're happy. Thus, marketing is about making us happy, and this in turn makes us want to buy.
So what can you do to be both happy and healthy? The single best way is to only buy quality bath and body products. This means you should not buy your products at large retail outlets, but search out boutiques or buy your products online where you have access to natural oil based products. Then you can feel happy, knowing that you are doing all you can for your skin.
