I liked your question very much,since i am regular investor in foreign currencies i would like to give you some idea about the pricing of gold and other precious metals and why they go up and down in value!see,the value of metals,commodities and crude oil are all valued in terms of US currencies,the value of these investements are directly affected by the value of currency.as we all know that US dollar is a safe haven currency-meaning during difficult economic times all investors dump their risk appetite investment and they hoard US dollars as their main investment(since no point holding on to investment which is going to loose its value,so they choose US dollar as their main investment during tough times)when us dollars gets stronger you can see the price of the gold,silver and other commodities fall in value because strong dollar can buy lot more goods for same price when compared to when it is inflated!when world economiy starts to better itself you can notice investors fleeing away from the US dollar currency to risk-appetite investments as they are more return yielding!and this the time you see gold and other metal price sky rocket.what you can see in this example is that face value of dollar is same but the goods what it can buy from the same face value has changed dramatically!no wonder why people buy gold to hedge against inflation,because unlike currency it can buy the same amount of goods regardless of time and economic cycles.to give you one simple example about the inflation(currency).remember what a dollar can buy you these days and what it can buy you ten years ago?the face value of dollar(which is $1) is same but what it can buy has changed due to time and economic cycles!In my theory though when things get better and lot better than todays economic conditions investors will eventually flee from gold and dollar currency to stocks and other risky investments since they are more yeilding than these two!gold hedges against inflation but you wont make a profit if you just level the score!your profit is money made after inflation for ex:inflation rate is 4% in australia!to fight the inflation you can leave your money in bank account where they pay interest of 4 or more percent,you made a real profit when you make five six or more percent,where you have beaten the market and inflation by earning more than 4%income!hope i didnt confuse you.read twice if you can!

gold, silver, copper and crude are not inversely proportioned,they are all different investment vehicles with their own back ground.the price of each investment are affected by number of reasons which i will outline as i go along with this subject.but before starting with investments it will be worth while to have a look at how the fundamentals work.sometimes when markets are very volatile investors are not worried about sticking to fundamentals,for them saving their principal money is more important than sticking to fundamentals.we call them 'fear' factor which over-rides all fundamentals,if you ask me i would say fear and greed is a disease.i have come across so many investors where i can pinpoint only 2 or 3 out of 20 is disciplined!okay coming to point why markets crash?its because 16 or 17 out of 20 are not disciplined!when they invest,they borrow or leverage money to invest out of greed and leveraging is a double edged sword,you can make quick profits or loss.they buy investments using leveraged amount expecting the market to go higher but if the markets goes the other way,a margin call is issued by the bank or by the lender to top up their account balance,if they dont top up or maintain margin level the bank has the right to sell the investments what investors hold.in this case bank is making sure that they are not loosing money leaving the investor with a loss.my advice in this case is invest with what you got and not with not what you got!

now lets have a look at how stock markets,currency markets commodity market(copper,tin,steel,and other non precious metals)precious metals market(gold,silver,palladium and platinum)and crude oil are interrelated.As i told you in previous conversation that US dollar gold and to some extent silver is regarded as safe haven investments.during a normal market cycle investor hold gold and silver as back up finance which hedges against inflation and if the markets go against them they sell this gold and silver to top up the account balance in answer to the margin call issued by their banks assuming the market will spring back again.but if it still goes against them badly they have no option but to sell their stocks and this is where the indisciplined investors get hurt badly and as of good investors if they come to know that market meltdown is inevitable,they start buying US dollar currencies and wait for the gold and silver to bottom out and then they start buying them as well to be safe!the main aim of investor is to make money regardles of market cycles.as said earlier during tough times dollar(us dollar only) is more expensive and gold and silver is cheap and it gets cheaper if investors keep dumping gold to raise extra cash to stop getting margin calls!(the reason for gold to skyrocket at this point is because federal reserve has spent almost trillion dollars or so to stimulate their economy,in other words printing more money to get the economy on its leg.this also means they are inflating the dollar value!once the economy stables the federal will start rising interest rates to combat inflation and that is when we will see gold and other precious metals fall back in prices,until then it will be skyrocketing,but if you look closely the price of gold is on the other side of the spectrum.it can skyrocket to another 200 or 300 $s but that is the risk you are taking if gold market crashes!)theoretically you should have bought them when it was hovering around 750$ mark for an ounce.my advice not worth taking a risk!during any investment market entry time is critical!)and i suppose so that gold has lost its lustre to enter market at this time! gold is still holding its value just because we are not out of woods yet(housing bubble/economy down turn)

other metals like non precious metals tend to do well when the stock markets are doing well because they are commodities and is directly related to consumer spending!people spend when they have jobs and they have jobs when stock market is in bull run!stock market crashes-people loose jobs and there by affecting their spending habits and thats where companies stops consuming commodities because no body wants to buy them during hard times!

crude oil is a different story though,it is affected by its availability(since most of them are produced in area where there is frequent regional conflicts like iran,nigeria and so!its price is also affected by the stockpiles in amercia(keeping in mind america is the largest consumer of crude oil)if stock piles are piling in america the price of crude will go down,and conflict in oil producing countries will send the oil price up!since oil is also produced in america where it is prone to deadly storms and other calamities which destroys the oil producing companies is also a reason for the oil price to spike. to put things in simple it is a game of supply and demand,too much supply will make the price go down and too much demand will make the price go up!
