The Good Old British Empire
The Good Old British Empire, one of the greatest cornerstones of history that conquered much of the then known world, bringing with it progress, technology and civilisation. I for one loved it, and often think I was born 40 years too late. However not everyone shares my admiration, not even most British. It is surely a time when Britain took great pride in itself, when it had a singularity of purpose, when it ruled the world, and when "Made in Britain" brought with it an automatic seal of quality. Alas this has all gone.
As a relatively new immigrant to the island I can't help noticing that, football aside, the British have lost direction. Somewhere between the Battle of Britain and the present we lost our identity, lost our focus, and settled for the mediocrity of being "another member of the EU" At some stage Britain looked at itself and felt embarrassed for conquering the world. That dreaded disease "political correctness" set in. All that was the British Empire was now considered bad. Politicians fell over themselves apologising for the sins of the past, trying to offer financial restitution to offset past moral sins, a process that is still in motion.
I saw all this from the opposite side. Born in paradise, Southern Rhodesia, from pioneer farming stock, we built the country into the bread basket of Africa. Then in 1965 we fell out with the British. I was in junior school and never understood the nuances of the situation. However the bottom line is Britain abandoned us as it did many of its colonies and hung us out to dry. We were left facing international sanctions, a protracted terrorist bush war which was to consume our youth. Don't get me wrong I was fiercely proud to be Rhodesian (I still am) and fought valiantly for the cause I believed in, but like all wars they're largely pointless and never won by the military but by fat politicians sitting in ivory towers thousands of miles removed from the reality on the ground.
Independence followed and the inevitable decay took root, culminating in modern day Zimbabwe, a country run by a rabid dictator, once a net agricultural exporter now its people starving, its currency once stronger than sterling now trading at several hundreds of trillions of Zimbabwe dollars to the pound. Damn Harold Wilson and labour for initiating it, and Damn Margaret Thatcher for her uncharacteristic weakness at Lancaster House talks.
Anyway, we cannot change the past but we can influence the future.
The future is not someplace we are going,
But one we are making,
And the process of making it
Will change both the maker and the destination.
