what is a red neck??

im a brit and dont know these things, but i get the idea it has something to do with southerners and hillbillies?
why is the south disliked? people always say they are imbred, why? are they actually lol?

Its a racist slur in varying degrees. Hillbillies are perceived as the scary imbred, toothless Deliverance people whereas Rednecks just live a country lifestyle that includes lots of outdoor activities and tend to be stubborn in their religious/lifestyle views. Alot of the negativity towards the South began right before the Civil War when there were slave owners and later on the main opposition of the civil rights movements in the 1960's and as you can imagine, that gave us a very negative image as close-minded and racist. The geography in the Ozarks, Appalachian mountains, etc. made those peoples isolated so as you can imagine, the rumors of incest, snake handling, religious fanaticism were born, and yes some of it has been true but you shouldn't let this affect how you perceive Southern Americans. America is big, and the climate and geography play alot in how culture is shaped and through that, the American South has our own distinct culture and if you were to visit Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA...any of the great southern cities, you would find that we all arent scary, toothless, imbred idiots. If you do visit, please dont refer to us that way...as many people on here have already pointed out, it is very offensive.
