Panathinaikos BC
History
The 100 years celebration 1908-2008
1918 - 1945
Panathinaikos started as a football team in 1908. In 1918, Giorgos Kalafatis attended basketball games between the Allies of World War I, in Paris. The sport of basketball was unknown until then in Greece. He returned to Greece with the necessary equipment and set up the basketball team, led by Apostolos Nikolaidis.
In 1922, played at the Panathenaic Stadium the first basketball match between Greek teams Panathinaikos and the YMCA. The lack of equipment and interest led to the dissolution of the group.
In 1937, he created the next group of Panathinaikos and the following year tried to catch up to those previously ready groups like the YMCA, Ethnikos Athinon, Panionios, Aris, Iraklis. Angelos Fillipou, Nikos Mantzaroglou, Litsas and Dimitrakos were the ringleaders of the group and then joined the Telis Karagiorgos, Thymios Karadimos, Giorgos Bofilios, Philipos Papaikonomou, Petros Polycratis and Nickos Polycratis. The years of German occupation PAO managed to keep the basketball team.
Postwar history
Fedon Matheou
1946 - 1960
In 1946, the first post-war championship and in 1947, Panathinaikos has emerged champions, with Giannis Lambrou, Missas Pantazopoulos, Stelios Arvanitis (players that won the bronze medal in Eurobasket 1949) and Jack Nicolaidis (nephew of Apostolos Nikolaidis).
In 1950 and 1951, Panathinaikos emerged champion again enhanced with the great athlete Fedon Matheou and Nikos Milas. In 1954 repeat its success. The next five years, the PAO, although there was strong, had to be renewed.
1960 - 1970
Giorgos Kolokythas
In 1961 Panathinaikos won the Greek championship with new leaders Giorgos Vassilakopoulos, Stelios Tavoularis, Petros Panagiotarakos and repeat the success in 1962. In 1962 played for the first time in European competition facing the Hapoel Tel Aviv for the European Championship.
In 1967, Panathinaikos crowned champion and is already struggling in the ranks of Giorgos Kolokithas one of the greatest basketball players of his era. In 1969, the winning of the Championship followed by the first European success of the team that was the entrance to the quartet of the Cup Winners Cup which was excluded from Dinamo Tbilisi. In 1970, the PAO was the first Greek team using foreign players in European games, which was the American Greenwood.
The Golden Age 1970 - 1984
In the next 14 years, Panathinaikos won 10 Greek championships with the great leader scorer Apostolos Kontos.
1971 - 1975
Apostolos Kontos
Kostas Mourouzis nicknamed the fox of trainning managed the team of the 4-K. The young Kontos, Koroneos, Kokolakis, Kefalos with the Iordanidis which functioned as a link with old players, won 5 consecutive championships and made the large excess of their time participating in the semifinals of the European Championship surrounded by American Chris Kirkland. Inis Varese one of the giants of the era was an insurmountable obstacle for Panathinaikos.
1976 - 1979
Over the next 4 season Panathinaikos won the championship in 1977 and gained Memos Ioannou in 1974. Panathinaikos won its first Greek Cup in 1979. That season played for the first time in team Greek-American David Stergakos, player with great contribution in the coming years.
1980 - 1984
The five years that followed, Panathinaikos won 4 championships (1980, 1981, 1982, 1984) and two cups (1982, 1983). Coached by Kostas Politis in 1982 won the first double and succeeded to place 5th in Europe after a contestant in the group was primarily exclude CSKA. In 1984 starring Liveris Andritsos and Tom Kappos, won the big game title game of Corfu, the last championship before the decline that will follow.
The great decline 1985 - 1992
1985 - 1988
In 1985, PAO classified 3rd in the league, Stergakos, Ioannou, Vidas, Andritsos, was the key players, and Koroneos who left the next year. The balances have now changed and Panathinaikos ceases to be a leader and is limited to a secondary role. Nevertheless was an appreciable opponent. In 1986 he made the surprise and exlude the powerful Aris from the the Greek Cup in the semifinals. In the final Panathinaikos won the Olympiakos. That was the last title until 1993. Over the next 2 years ranked 5th after many years.
1989 - 1992
Fragiskos Alvertis
In 1988 permitted the use of foreign players in the league and Panathinaikos acquire Edgar Jones from the NBA. He was a capable shooter, scorer and rebounder and for the next 2 years was the star of the team. The PAO caused significant wins over the protagonists teams but refrain from discrimination. The next two years, Antonio Davis who made a great career in the NBA replaces Jones in the lead of the team stats. Panathinaikos had acquired the most talented young players Alvertis, Economou, Myriounis but is experiencing its worst period in its history since the 7th position in 1991 drop to 8th in 1992 and left for the first time ever outside Europe.
Return to discrimination 1992 - 1995
Nikos Galis was the captain of the rebirth of the team. With his effort Panathinaikos became a strong team, capable to claim all the titles, but his retairment during 1994-95 season, deprived the opportunity to gain a major title.
1992 - 1994
Nikos Galis
In summer of 1992 attempted a full reconstruction to Panathinaikos. The top Greek basketball player Nikos Galis gained from the group and flanked by the stars Stojan Vrankovic, Tit Sokk, Arian Komazec leads the PAO in winning the Greek Cup and the loses Championship final, although he had the home advantage. The next year 1993-94 Nikos Galis, Alexander Volkov and Stojan Vrankovic led Panathinaikos to third place in Europe for the first time in team's history and despite this deemed success in Greece failed to make out.
1994 - 1995
The 1994-95 season started with the best conditions and the acquisition of Panagiotis Giannakis and arko Paspalj. PAO was the favorite for all titles. Excluded from Greek Cup Olympiakos in a very tough game before the start of the Championship. Nikos Galis the player that led PAO against the cup game against Olympiakos and in the decisive game for the Euroleague qualifiers left the group after the first games for the Greek Championship. So despite PAO made great games he only managed to retain third place in Europe and compete in the Greek Cup final.
European, Intercontinental and Greek Champions 1996-1998
The three years 1996-98 was the period when Panathinaikos won consecutive the European Championsip, the Intecontinental cup and the Greek championship thus fulfilling the all objectives set.
1995 - 1996
Dominique Wilkins
The expectations had now risen high on the team Panathinaikos was imperative to obtain a significant title. In the summer of 1995 acquired Dominique Wilkins, one of the top Americans who played in Europe. Coach was Bozidar Maljkovic. Together with Giannakis, Vrankovic, Alvertis, Patavoukas compose a very experienced team and the became in Paris, European champions, an unprecedented success for a Greek basketball club. In April 1996, at the Final Four (F4), Panathinaikos was the first Greek team to win the European Championships (now called the Euroleague), beating FC Barcelona in a unique tournament final, by a score of 67-66. In Greece, the exodus of Dominique Wilkins in the final of the league led Panathinaikos to a painful defeat.
1996 - 1997
The next season, the Maljkovic remove all the stars of the team and trying to assemble a team of total. With the start of the season PAO crowned Intercontinental Champion prevailing by 2-1 wins in a 3 game series over Olimpia de Venado Tuerto, South American champions. But the refreshment of the team failed and Panathinaikos fail to participate in the Final Four to defend the European title. In the championship placed 5th losing the right to participate in the Euroleague next season so the only title that would be an ideal target to overcome the crisis, was the Greek league of the next season.
1997 - 1998
Dino Radja
Lefteris Subotic assume technical leadership and convince the Dino Radja be downloaded to the PAO. Byron Scott and Fanis Christodoulou accompany the great movements and with the help of Alvertis, Economou, Koch won the league in Greece after 14 years. In the Greek league Panathinaikos has a striking appearance and presented the players determined not to let another chance for the title to lose.
1999 - The championship inside SEF
Important proved for Panathinaikos the period 1998-99 as Olympiakos who earned the home advantage was prepared to return to the top. The championship was the last race of the playoffs and Panathinaikos won away against the Olympiacos noting one of the most decisive victories. Panathinaikos, not only kept the title but led Olympiakos to a process of renewal and reconstruction which failed for the next yers.
Obradovic era - The recognition in Greece and Europe
The advent of the Panathinaikos Zeljko Obradovic followed with a period of very major successes recognition group and highlighted in one of the strongest in Europe over time.
2000 - 2002
Dejan Bodiroga
The first thing that made Obradovic was to adapt Panathinaikos to Dejan Bodiroga the player on which based whole team of PAO. Bodiroga was the absolute leader of Panathinaikos. PAO won 3 consecutive championships in 1999, 2000, 2001 and competed 3 times in a row to European champion final (2000, 2001 (Souproleaguea), 2002) of which he won the 2 (2000, 2002 in the Euroleague). Failed to conquer Greece Cup even though he played in two finals. Radja, Rebraa, Rogers, Middleton, Alvertis, Kutluay were some of the players who excelled in this space. The dominance in the Greek league was suspended in 2002, the year that won the 3rd European Championships at the end of which there have been significant changes, starting with the withdrawal of Bodiroga and the necessary renewal that was compelling.
Euroleague 2000
In 2000, at the Thessaloniki Euroleague Final Four, Panathinaikos were the Champions of Europe for the second time, beating Macabbi Tel Aviv 73-67 in the final.
Euroleague 2002
In 2002, at the Bologna Euroleague Final Four, Panathinaikos brought to Athens the most prestigious European trophy for the third time, beating hosts Kinder Bologna 89-83 in the final.
2003 - 2009
Dimitris Diamantidis
The 2002-03 season Obradovic had to return Panathinaikos to the top of Greece starting a from new basis. It achieved its objective after the next 7 years he won 6 doubles and 2 triple Crown creating an empire. Panathinaikos radically changed the style of hos the game after replacing Bodiroga. The game summary of the Serbian athlete was replaced by an unprecedented model of team game that proved to represent the absence of a super star. Players such as Lakovic, McDonald, then Alvertis, Diamantidis, Hatzivrettas, Scepanovic, Batiste and later Spanoulis, Siskauskas, Jasikevicius, who played for the overall success of the team. The PAO thus became a mechanism to win titles which have never been irreplaceable player and the distinction was identified with the group.
Euroleague 2007
At the 2007 Euroleague Final Four, which was held on its home court of OAKA in Athens, Panathinaikos became the European Champions for the fourth time, beating the defending champions CSKA Moscow 93-91 in the final.
Euroleague 2009
The same teams competed in the final of the 2009 Euroleague Final Four Berlin and Panathinaikos won the trophy for the fifth time.
On December 14, 2009 PAO team emerged the top team for 2009 in voting for the Sports Journalists Association, with 1,291 votes. In addition, the coach, Zelimir Obradovic voted top coach, with 1,399 votes.
Less significant European successes
Panathinaikos has advanced to the Final Four of the Euroleague or its predecessors another four times: Tel Aviv in 1994 (3rd), Zaragoza in 1995 (3rd), Paris in 2001 (2nd) and Moscow in 2005 (3rd). Other significant successes are: the two participations in the semifinals of the Cup Winners' Cup (1969, 1998), as well as the course up to the semi-finals of the Champions' Cup for the season 1971-72 (eliminated by Ignis Varese (78-70, 55-69). In the 1981-82 season, Panathinaikos participated in the finals of the Champions' Cup of that time, eliminating consecutively the teams of CSKA Moscow and Levski Sofia.
Against NBA teams
Panathinaikos is the first Greek team to ever play in the USA against NBA teams. On October 11, 2007, Panathinaikos played against the Houston Rockets, and on October 18, 2007, Panathinaikos played against the then defending NBA champions, the San Antonio Spurs.
Fans
The team, which is famous for its fans' passionate support, also set a record (broken in 2009) for the highest home game attendance in the history of the Euroleague, which is 20,000 fans, achieved at a home match in OAKA against Benetton Treviso on March 29, 2006, for the second phase of the Euroleague 2005-06. An attendance of 18,900 fans has also been achieved three times in home matches of the Greens, against Efes Pilsen in 2005 and TAU Cermica (twice) in 2006. While PAO no longer holds the record for largest Euroleague home crowd, it still holds the honor of being involved in the record matchAO was the opponent for Partizan Belgrade when it drew 22,567 to Belgrade Arena for a 2009 match.
